(April 23, 2013) — The UTSA College of Engineering will host its first Technology Symposium showcasing innovative student projects and research performed across multiple disciplines including engineering, architecture, business and science. The symposium, which is free and open to the public, will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday, April 30 in the H-E-B University Center Ballroom (1.104) on the UTSA Main Campus.
The symposium will include an exhibition of Engineering Capstone Projects; the Architecture, Business, Engineering and Science (ABES) Student Conference; and the Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (CITE) $100K Student Technology Venture Competition.
The Capstone Projects are the culmination of the engineering undergraduate studies, enabling all senior engineering students to apply the knowledge they have accumulated throughout their programs to design, develop, and implement innovative and relevant engineering products. A total of 157 students in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering will feature their work. Projects include a device to recognize sign language and translate the gestures onto a screen, the design of an 8,000-seat football stadium that will serve as a multifunctional event center in the heart of the Broadway Corridor and an adjustable medical shower platform for the disabled under hospice care.
The ABES Conference showcases student accomplishment, promotes research excellence at UTSA, and highlights science, engineering, business and architecture education in San Antonio. In addition to student research presentations and keynote speakers, ABES will host a Hack-A-Thon where groups of three or fewer students compete to create the best solution for a software design problem.
Ten UTSA teams comprised of business and engineering students will compete for cash and business-related services at the $100,000 Student Technology Venture Competition, hosted by the UTSA Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (CITE), an interdisciplinary center in the College of Business and College of Engineering. Held semi-annually, the $100K Student Technology Venture Competition at UTSA offers the largest award of all undergraduate business planning competitions in the nation. The competitors will offer new technologies poised to enhance health care, fitness and energy conservation.
The symposium also will feature renowned business and engineering leaders in San Antonio including a keynote presentation by former president of Kinetic Concepts Inc. Catherine M. Burzik.
