The UTSA College of Engineering invites you to it’s second annual Technology Symposium showcasing innovative student projects and research performed across multiple disciplines. The symposium will not only include work in engineering, but also advances achieved in architecture, business, and science. The event will include the biannual Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (CITE) $100K Student Technology Venture Competition.

Free Special Event Parking for guests of the Technology Symposium is located in the Ximenes Ave. Garage. A Parking Attendant will be stationed at the entrance to the garage, please pick up a special event swipe card to gain access and exit from the garage.

The Capstone Projects are the culmination of the engineering undergraduate studies, enabling all engineering students, in their senior year, to apply the knowledge they have accumulated throughout their programs to design, develop, and implement innovative and relevant engineering products.

CITE $100K Student Technology Venture Competition

The CITE $100K Student Technology Venture Competition focuses on student entrepreneurial activities, to give students hands-on experience as early stage entrepreneurs. Teams of senior business and engineering students work throughout the semester to develop a technology demonstrator and business plan to successfully develop a new company.

The symposium will also feature renowned business and engineering leaders from San Antonio, including Jeff Clarke, the vice chairman, Operations and president, Client Solutions, for Dell, and a tour of UTSA’s renowned Vizlab.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Capstone Projects

Galm Road Bridge
Azamat Kasymov, Jacob R. Fuentes, Ignacio Macias, Jaime Sanchez, Albert Espinoza
The group will design a bridge at Glam Road and Culebra Creek crossing as well as update one mile of roadway from two lanes to four lanes. The project will include drainage design, schematic development, roadway design, bridge design, and a traffic plan.

The Escape at Evans
Roaul Morales, Rodrigo Frausto, Kelsey Garner, Tina Cavazos, Kyle Piland
This project will cover all civil engineering aspects related to this type of land development including preparation of the following: master plan, overall utility plan, tree preservation plan, storm water management, etc. A plat will be prepared, as well as a full set of street plan and profiles, water distribution plans, and sanitary sewer plans. Structural design documents and a site plan for a community center pavilion and club house will also be developed.

Perrin Creek Business Park

The proposed development for this industrial zoned property is two 35,000 square foot built-to-suit office spaces. The business park is currently home to a 86,000 square foot warehouse space. The drainage, roads, and detention facility must be reviewed to determine impacts of the proposed development and bring the property up to current City of San Antonio development standards.

Duc-ee’s Convenience Store and Gas Station

The property is owned by DGS Lang Development, and the Duc-ee’s Convenience store and Gas Station that will sit on this property is estimated at 40,000 square feet. The store will accept compact cars and trucks. It is not intended for the use of 18-wheelers. The estimated number of pumps the station will serve is 20-30.

Potranco Market

Proposed multi-retail office buildings to be located in a high-traffic intersection of 1604 and Potranco Road. The high-traffic contributes to the stable occupancy at the Potranco Market development commercial site.

Richland Highs Complex
Faviola Manzano, Ivan Barrera, Aiden VIncent, Arturo Duran, Ernesto Garza
This project consists of a three-story, 90,000 square foot office building. The site is clear and flat within the building area. There are several commercial buildings in the area including a Walmart, hotels, a bank and various restaurants.

NISD Middle School
Marwin Lopez, Julio Lopez,  Joel Escobar, Ahmad Alrashidan, Omar Alducin, Hector Pena
Northside Independent School District (NISD) plans to fund the development of a middle school facility and improve Talley Road to comply with the increased traffic of the school. The project will include the design parameters of a typical middle school in NISD. The facility has a lot size of 34.1 acres that will include the institution, multi-purpose gyms, library, patio area and cafeteria. The school will accommodate approximately 1,200 students and about 60 classrooms for the students with an additional set of rooms for faculty. Our project concluded four main parts of designing the school: grading plan, drainage, utilities, roadway and structural.

Mechanical Engineering Capstone Projects

EHS (Engineers Helping Society)
Alberto Ferreiro, Arcadio Salas, Jaime Carrillo, Max Printz
Team EHS partnered with Biomtec, a bioengineering company, to build a medical testing protocol to quantify the strength of the quadriceps muscle after knee surgery. Team EHS made physical modifications to a leg curl/extension exercise machine and connected to a Data Acquisition (DAQ). The data collected was organized to create a protocol based on age, weight and gender to determine whether or not a knee is healthy.

Drive (Automatically Adjusting Motorcycle Windscreen)
David Griffin, Thomas Gurrola, Nathan Lynch, Matt Sutter
The purpose of this project was to develop an automatically adjusting windscreen for a cruiser motorcycle. The need for this project was emphasized due to the lack of windscreens on the market that offer wind protection for the rider while also maintaining the motorcycle’s aesthetics. It is automated by an electronic control system that actuates the windscreen position based on the differential pressure measurements from a pitot tube.

Extinction*

Team Extinction has developed a sparring glove that incorporates a resistance band shock absorber that duals as an exercise work out band. Providing users the opportunity to spar and workout their muscles at the same time, the shock absorber also reduces impact force (20% reduction) enabling safer sparring sessions with less injuries.

3AM Designs
Matthew Salazar, Van (Joey) Pham, William Lee, Van Lai
The objective is to fabricate a blunt trauma detection system for football helmets that serves as a gauge for impacts exceeding Head Impact Criterion (HIC) rating of 250, defined by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The design will be non-intrusive and a cost effective alternative to alerting individuals that a player has sustained a serious impact to the head.

Abaddon Engineering
Nathan Andersen, Joel Duran, Cade Kapalski, Adolfo Moreno
The purpose of this project is to design, build, and test a modification to the turbine blade platform of the General Electric Frame 7FA, that will extend service life by mitigating crack initiation and propagation in the platform. Conjugate heat transfer simulations as well as stress simulations were used to help design and analyze the performance of the blade modification.

Arc Design

The Automated Liquid Medication Dispenser is a clinic-based machine used for filling a syringe with a variety of medication and dosage levels in an efficient manner. The apparatus utilizes a motor driven carousel that houses eight different vials attached to a base. The carousel rotates a given medication to the proper location and lowers onto the syringe causing the needle to perforate the rubber stopper on the vial.

ART (Advanced Research Technologies)
Tyler Brockman, Joseph Kissling, Samuel Schaefer, Keith Nardo
Advanced Research Technologies (ART) developed, the Simple Proactive Emergency Extraction Device (SPEED), a backboard capable of adjusting to the shape of a person, as found in the damaged vehicle. It utilizes a set of machine tapered conical friction locking hinges to allow for 100° of variable patient positioning. The patient remains in that same position all the way to the hospital until the patient can be further evaluated and x-rayed by medical technicians.

da Vinci Technologies Inc.
Maria Riveroll, Paul Burgess, Michael Trevino, Steven Day
daVinci Technologies has developed a patentable technology that simultaneously reduces air-conditioning and clothes dryer power consumption in homes. The device completely eliminates the parasitic load the dryer causes on air-conditioning in the home. Furthermore, the device was capable of lowering the power consumption of the dryer by up to 50%, which is approximately $200 savings per year.
NBD2Nezar Alotaibi, Dustin Barre, Bobby Holm, David Moore
The purpose of this project is to devise a mechanism that allows one person to be able to load or unload two Laser® sailboats, while at the shoreline, without any assistance. This is accomplished by a linkage that lifts the first boat placed on the trailer into an elevated position, where it is secured for transportation, allowing a second boat to be slipped underneath the raised boat.

Elixir*

The device the ELIXIR team has designed is a lumbar therapy belt that provides hot, cold, and alternating therapy, coupled with a bladder that inflates within a back brace to increase pressure for therapeutic and heat transfer purposes. A device that provides temperature and compression control while maintaining user friendly operations has been constructed.

G.A.F.F.
Gabrielle Abeghe Obiang, Miguel Fascino, Wayne Fulmer, Nicholas Galaviz
To conduct the Toyota Tacoma Master-Cab Fitting Dolly fit test, various components were designed to secure the Tacoma truck cab to the dolly, datum spheres were positioned around the dollies frame to allow calibration with a coordinate measurement machine (CMM), and the front mounting brackets were redesigned to allow the attachment of the front bumper assembly. As a result, the modified dolly allows Toyota QE to calibrate a CMM to the cab/dolly system and take measurements with an accuracy of ± 0.1 mm.

Unity Solutions

A transonic-supersonic intermittent blow-down wind tunnel capable of reaching Mach 2.0 in a 2”x 2” test section will be designed and fabricated for the use in Mechanical Engineering Laboratory. The test section can support test objects of a ¼ inch diameter by 1 inch length. The wind tunnel design is a low cost, low power alternative to wind tunnels of the similar size and type.

SETT
Huzeifa Badshah, Juan Vega, Pedro Mojica, Gilberto Garza
The purpose of this project is to develop a transient test protocol for two stroke small engines with a power rating of 3hp or less. A test stand accommodating an alternator (configured to be used as a dynamometer), engine, safety cover, servo controller, and a resistive load bank was constructed to facilitate the development of the test cycle. Small engine operation including transients was simulated on the test stand according to the protocol developed. This protocol can be used to impose emissions regulations on small engines that accurately reflect emissions during normal small engine operation.

Tuned Out
Steven Roloff, Abel Santellana, Matthew Dziuk, William Johnson
The purpose of this project was to design an automatic guitar tuner for the 2007 Gibson Hummingbird guitar. Alternative auto-tuning designs do exist, but this design requires no modification to the guitar itself, thereby saving the integrity of the guitar. The resulting tuning configuration is accurate well below the threshold of the human ear for professional precision and high accuracy tuning.

MechanYsm
Andrew Casterlin, Ivana Escobar, Derek Kohlenberg, Noel Manuel, Jon Ambach, James Whetstone
MechanYsm has developed Oclus. The device occludes flow in a variety of locations that include, but are not limited to, aneurysms at bifurcations and wide-neck aneurysms. Through endovascular surgery, Oclus implants as a single piece, which expedites surgery and allows a quick recovery for the patient. Oclus uniquely offers capability of treatment at universal areas in the brain, implants faster than current procedures, and supports healthy blood flow post operation.

Ninkasi

Our client, Busted Sandal, is a San Antonio based microbrewery that did not anticipate product demand exceeding their supply capacity. The purpose of the project is to retrofit a growing microbrewery to double production capacity. Ninkasi engineers have developed a complete construction package that includes Process Flow Diagrams; Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams; and Field Location Plans. This construction package is divided into three different phases, bronze package, silver package and platinum package allowing our client to expand their brewery as their business grows.

Mediflow

Team MEDIFLOW designed a smaller and more mobile machine for Sleep Apnea that intigrates the blower into the mask and is attached to a power supply/control housing, eliminating the obstructive hose. The power supply houses the circuit and a rechargable battery around the patient’s waist. The removal of the hose and an anchored power supply allow the patient greater freedom to move around during sleep and portability for traveling.

PalmKEG
Nic Villarreal, Jorge Franco, Steve Perez, Peter Mancuso
The PalmKEG is a device that, when paired with a vacuum-insulated growler, was successfully developed to retain ideal pressure and temperature while transporting and dispensing the beer. The regulation process keeps the CO2 pressure on over 50 fl oz. of beer in the container between 10 and 12 psi at all times for at least a week easily with no visible fluid leakage. Paired with the vacuum-insulated, stainless steel growler, the temperature stayed below 42°F during every 4-hour test outside the refrigerator.

Legend Engineering

The current detection system on the lower sub of a cement head detects the passing of components less than 50% of the time. Through the use of sonic profiling equipment the Sonic Lower Indicator Sub will be able to provide a better indication system than current one in use. As wiper plugs and darts travel through the pipe they will emit a vibration frequency. With an attached alert system, operators on site will be able to know when a component has passed during key stages of operation.

Heatronics
Raid Alqorashi, Brian Needham, Ivan Velasquez
Heatronics developed an active cold air intake system to be used on a SAE competition race car.  The system includes a heat pipe/thermoelectric arrangement to reduce the intake air flow temperature by ten degrees Celsius and thereby increases the power output of the engine.  Fluid mechanic simulations show that this system will not interfere with the pressure wave tuning used on the race car.

Genie Innovation*
Adan Sanchez, Michael Lasch, Victor Cardona, Salihou Kone
After a tracheal intubation, with time, mucus secretions accumulate inside the tube restricting air flow to the patient’s lungs. The ET Clean incorporates an open airway to deliver oxygen while suctioning mucus throughout the entire tube. A mucus simulant at varying viscosities was used to test the effectiveness of the ET Clean. The results validate the design criteria objectives and the ET Clean efficiency.

Electrical Engineering Capstone Projects

Steelhead Spartan
Taylor Harper, Kevin Nardo, Eric Birkelbach, Shrey Kodinariya
A master-slave command system to control a performing robot puppet using two constructed robots. The “doll” robot would create a series of motions that would then be replicated by the puppet. The various stored motions could then be rearranged to change the puppet performance. This robot is sponsored by and will be used by the SA Children’s Museum to introduce children to the basic concepts of programing.

SENSOR-BALL
Bryan Gamboa, Skyler Levrier, Nathaniel Lopez, Dominic Parra
The project design consists of an internal football sensor network which will measure and relay data such as impact area, pressure, angles, velocity, and trajectory via wirelessly to a designated computer and/or cellular phone. This design is intended to accurately measure, record, and transmit the helpful information for coaches, scouts and athletes alike with a focus on kickers.

DEVAWT
Richard Dominguez, Edgar Siller, Monti Young
A vertical axis wind turbine that will generate electricity to power up city lights and traffic lights. The group’s implementation will not just harness wind, but will also harness vehicle draft allowing the turbine to operate with or without prevailing winds. The turbine will be placed on the middle barrier of the highway to collect the draft vehicles produce generating power and collecting details of traffic conditions based on the power generation characteristics.

Voiced Controlled Elevator
Adrienne Duirden, Laura Garcia, Justina Williams
A device that will control elevators by voice command. The device will be used as an aide for persons with disabilities including the visually impaired, quadriplegics, and hand and/or arm amputees. It would also increase sanitation in elevators. The team’s design will connect two systems that will communicate with one another using Bluetooth Technology.

Electrocardiogram Waveform Generator
Shane Henk, Jarrett Hornsby, Kevin O’Connor
The Electrocardiogram (ECG) Waveform Generator is a portable simulation device designed to inexpensively and accurately test ECG machines. Current methods involve using signal generators to replicate simple waveforms or simple ECG waves (tests against a clean normal ECG signal). ECG generators containing various abnormalities are very expensive and bulky, even for low end devices. The group’s solution will provide the ability to simulate custom ECG waveforms (from actual patient data) in a low cost portable solution.

NoDream

This system will prevent drivers from falling asleep by detecting drowsiness using an infrared camera with various tracking algorithms, such as eye tracking and head tracking. Once the device detects the user falling asleep, a car seat vibrator activates and a speaker sounds. The device will also activate a cell phone application to display the nearest rest-stops and/or hotels located.

Store Navigation APPlication (SNApp) is a two part system designed to address the need for improving consumer confidence in the IT infrastructure of retailers while simultaneously increasing profit and personalizing the shopping experience. Need ingredients? SNAPP simply dictates those items and store names to your phone for pick up at the location of your choice creating a quasi-drive-through scenario for your shopping list.

Bus-bar Protection System

The design and implement of an OC protection system at a low cost to protect the main electric switchboard and bus bar. This will be done by using a low cost controlling circuit that will provide rapid response to circuit breaker overloads generated by various fault incidences.

Driver Assistant De-Hazing System

The Driver Assistance De-Hazing system will be a small device that is mounted either around the windshield or the bumper area of the vehicle with a LCD display mounted in the line of sight of the driver on the dashboard inside the vehicle. The device will display a clear view of the road ahead for the driver when fog is present by transmitting the filtered signal to the LCD display.

Sensor Bot
Anngelique Canty, Jamal Davis, Chris Farquer, Priyanka Patel
The project is designed to teach children pre-programming and to expose them to the engineering sciences based around robotic technologies. It will be used to promote education and enhance the community and is being sponsored by the SA Children’s Museum to be used as an exhibit. The project will contain a robot prototype that will use various types of sensors to navigate a predesigned obstacle course. Young children will learn the basic concepts of programming by choosing from pre-written commands.

Power Systems Distribution

A software program designed for O’Connell Robertson’s Architecture and Design Company that will be capable of calculating load summaries for buildings, facilities, and plants etc., while accurately sizing a transformer, generator, and solar array to provide precise cost analysis for their customers. The program will utilize NEC and industry standard power calculations and algorithms and display summarized results for the client’s customers.

Wildlife deterrent and monitoring system

A system designed to protect or take care of a garden by utilizing sensors to protect the garden by either a spray of water, a loud sound of a native predatory, or green laser lights. The gardener will not only be able to choose the mode of deterrent but will also be able to set the nutrient level and moisture level of the soil.

Sinkulator

The Sinkulator is a kitchen sink that has the ability to re-circulate water rather than drawing it continuously from a structure’s water supply. There are many instances in which using the water supply is wasteful. For instance, according to a study done by Siemens the average amount of water used to wash dishes by hand is approximately 20 gallons. The purpose of the Sinkulator is to re-circulate, filter, and heat a smaller amount of water, 3 to 5 gallons.

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is hosting the Seventh Annual Architecture, Business, Engineering and Science Student Conference, designed to showcase student accomplishment, promote research excellence at UTSA, and highlight science, engineering, business, and architecture education in San Antonio. This year’s conference theme is “Cloud Computing Technology and Its Applications in Engineering, Science and Biology—San Antonio’s Next Advance.” It reflects expectations for UTSA to emerge at the forefront of research and development excellence at both state and national levels.

The ABES Conference consists of multiple student paper presentation as well as keynote lectures by three distinguished guest.

CITE $100K Student Technology Venture Competition Teams

Artemis Care developed an indoor tracking system called Apollo’s Eye that safeguards special need individuals while respecting their freedom and privacy. Student members include Jose Alanis, Amy GarciaHector GreenRobert MorrisChris ReyesManuel Serrata and Edgar Villansenor.

Circa-Invention created the Frisballer, a machine that launches Frisbees and tennis balls with a touch of a button. Student members include Scott DeslauriersChris Lee,Noe Linan, Barry PryceNick SpeerReginald Thompson and Monica Urrutia.

ELD Energy Loss Detection Software detects energy leaks in a building and determines the fiscal losses caused by these leaks. It will also cost out the building improvements necessary to get rid of these problems. Student members include Marcelo Andres, Juan C. Jose Mendez and Luis F. Nunez.

Jack N’ Slide is a wheelchair accessory that aids patients in wheelchair to bed transfers. Their product replaces the canvas seat of a wheelchair with a mechanical lift seat that easily bolts to the frame of a standard wheelchair. Student members include Gerald Balanon, Danna Lopez, Crystal Ngumezi, Jaehyun Park, Nicholas Sohocki, Adi Ray-Tahtinen and David Willis.

Leto Solutions’s Aquilonix provides a thermoelectric cooling system that adds comfort and improves hygiene for prostheses users to create a cooled environment in the socket portion of a prosthesis, while dissipating heat from the area. Student members include Austin Darius, Nam Do, Eric Michael Garza, Enrique Medrano, Jake Montez, David Schultz, Justin Stultz and Gary Walters

Mommy Pad and Car seat is a vibrating pad built into a car seat to comfort a child while in a car. Student members include Neel Desai, Cindy Elizarraras, Rico Jaeger, Michael King, Bader Al Kooheji, Jorge Molin, Karen Vega and Michael Wiiki.

PLaCR I.T. provides a fast , accurate and easily-repeated method of centering a gamma radiation source for small-batch Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and inspection of pipe welds in the 36”–60” diameter range. Student members include Raisha Leal, Roby Myles, Luis Preciado and Christina Thomas.

Reddo Communication System created a portable device for translating sign language into voice. Student members include J. Aaron Kapp, Samantha Massoud and Jennifer Peter.

Smart Steer is a steering wheel cover that manages the infotainment system of the vehicle without requiring the driver to look away from traffic – hence decreasing distractions and unexpected accidents. Student members include Ricardo AngolaJason Conner, Cory FarekLeonardo Mejia Luis Miguel SaucedoMichael Starkweather and Rodrigo Tafoya.

Spyder Cycling Cyclosa invented a belt-driven bicycle that is lighter, quieter, stronger, more efficient and requires less maintenance. Student members include Lauren Anzaldua, Randall Garcia and Brandon Villarreal.

Ten UTSA teams comprised of business and engineering students will compete for $100,000 in cash and business-related services at the $100,000 Student Technology Venture Competition, hosted by the UTSA Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (CITE). Competitors will be scored on the viability of their proprietary new technologies and the business plans they developed to market those technologies.

Held semi-annually, the $100,000 tech competition at UTSA offers the largest award of all undergraduate business planning competitions in the nation. The competitors will offer new technologies poised to enhance health care, fitness and energy conservation.

The teams will be judged by local academic, business and entrepreneurial experts on their technology, business plan and presentation. At the close of the daylong competition, the winning teams will have the opportunity to pitch their companies to potential investors. In addition to a cash prize, the winning teams will receive consulting services, marketing services, office space and other benefits to support them in getting their projects off the ground.

UTSA established the competition in 2007 when it observed that its engineering students were developing new technologies and its business students were writing business plans, but neither group of students continued their efforts beyond turning in their projects for a grade. With the competition in place, UTSA’s students are now developing marketable technologies and forming viable new companies based on those technologies.

UTSA’s $100,000 Student Technology Venture Competition founding sponsor is the Texas Research & Technology Foundation. Additional sponsors are Cox | Smith, the San Antonio Technology Center, Startech, Rackspace, the UTSA Colleges of Business and Engineering, and the UTSA Vice President for Research.

CITE, an interdisciplinary center in the Colleges of Business and Engineering, was established in 2006 to create a pipeline for UTSA faculty, students and surrounding business community to develop new technology ventures. Through a process of education, experiences, resources and support, CITE is focused on fostering the growth of new technology-based ventures. Through hands-on activities, projects, internships and competitions, experiences are created that help unlock the inner entrepreneur in students, faculty and the public. CITE also coordinates resources for supporting early venture execution within the university or in collaboration with companies and provides linkages to IP protection, incubation and funding that support the successful launch of new technology ventures.
