2016-2017 Scholarships

ERIC DANIEL HERNANDEZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in the Memory of Eric Daniel Hernandez, who died tragically the morning of December 24, 2013. He was a junior at UTSA, pursuing a Mechanical Engineer degree at the time of his death. Eric was a young man with various interests and played various musical instruments such as 6 string bass guitars along with the ukulele. He was a Mexican Folkloric dancer for 17 years. He was a season ticket holder for the San Antonio Spurs and was a great supporter of the Roadrunner football team. He was a very generous person, who loved life. He was a great friend, a tremendous son and brother.

DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY (DoN) MATERIALS RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

Award: $2,000 each semester

The Multifunctional Electronic Materials and Devices Research Laboratory (MeMDRL) in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering, announces Research Scholarships (Undergraduate), Fellowships (Graduate Level), and Internships (during Summer) made available by a grant from the Department of Navy (DoN).

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Full-time UTSA student seeking a bachelor’s in the College of Engineering.
  • Undergraduate GPA ≥ 2.8, with 60 hours or more completed
  • Interested in research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) of electronic materials, devices and systems.
  • Willing to participate in weekly materials engineering research seminar and/or to conduct directed research under faculty supervision.
  • Interested in developing future career with a branch of the Navy.
  • Satisfy Department of Defense security clearance process.

ANJU-RAI MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

DEADLINE:  Closed

AWARD:  $1,400

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Full-time undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering at UTSA
  • Freshmen applicant must have a minimum SAT score of 1000 and/or minimum ACT score of 21 and have graduated in the top 25% of their high school class
  • Applicants who are current students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrated achievement in Electrical Engineering related coursework
  • Scholarship is renewable for up to three years after initial scholarship is awarded if the student maintains the minimum GPA and full-time status. Renewal is dependent upon availability of funds.
  • As long as women make up less than 50% of the students enrolled in the undergraduate electrical engineering program at UTSA, women will be given preference in the scholarship selection process.

  • Recipient must be enrolled on a full-time basis actively pursuing a degree at UTSA (minimum of 12 credit hours) as an undergraduate student or (minimum 9 credit hours) as a graduate student

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate students enrolled on a full-time basis (12 semester credit hours) actively pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering at UTSA.
  • Applicants may be incoming freshmen with a minimum 3.2 high school cumulative GPA or UTSA undergraduates with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
  • Applicants must have authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for other than training purposes (student/temporary visas do not qualify).
  • Applicants should have a strong interest in The Boeing Company and will be encouraged to apply for Boeing summer internships.

DR. AMRATLAL M. PATEL ENGINEERING MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Full-time student at UTSA (minimum of 12 credit hours) as an undergraduate student or a full-time basis (minimum of 9 credit hours) as a graduate student.
  • Entering freshmen must have SAT score of at least 1100 or ACT score of at least 24.
  • Recipients must be pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering offered by the College of Engineering at UTSA.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.25 for undergraduate students, a minimum GPA of 3.7 and a GRE score (Qualitative + Quantitative) of at least 1150 for graduate students.
  • Renewable for up to 3 years of undergraduate studies or 1 year of graduate studies as long as student maintains full-time status and minimum GPA requirements.  Renewal is dependent upon availability of funds.

SAM MADRID JR. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

DEADLINE: Closed

AWARD:  $4,500

The Sam Madrid, Jr. Endowed Scholarship in the College of Engineering was established in the Fall of 1994.  It is named after a native San Antonio engineer with a long record of professional and community achievements.  Mr. Madrid graduated from San Antonio Vocational Technical High School.  After serving in the U. S. Navy, Mr. Madrid attended Texas A&M University under the G. I. Bill and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.  Mr. Madrid started his employment at Kelly AFB as the first Hispanic design engineer ever hired.  He advanced into executive-level positions including many years of service as Executive Assistant to the Commander.  Simultaneously, he was deeply involved in community work, including service as Chairman of the Bexar County Hospital Board of Managers, President and Board Chairman of the United Way’s Board of Trustees and Charter Board Member of the Economic Opportunity Development Corporation.  Mr. Madrid has been a perennial supporter of education and was involved in establishing the Engineering Program at The University of Texas at San Antonio. QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicant must be a United States citizen.
  • Applicant must be a current student at UTSA or incoming freshman for the Fall 2015 Semester.  The applicant must have graduated from a San Antonio area high school.
  • Applicant must have “B” average in his or her high school work and a “B” average (at least a 3.0 grade point average) in any college work.
  • Applicant must have applied for financial aid through The University of Texas at San Antonio Office of Student Financial Aid and must be certified as having a financial need by that office.
  • Applicant must have a declared major in one of the following disciplines:  Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

Recipient Requirements Scholarship recipients must enroll as a full-time student in The University of Texas at San Antonio in the 2015-2016 academic year and must pursue one of the majors listed in the eligibility requirements. Instruction to Applicants

  1. Complete the Application form.
  2. Obtain a letter of recommendation preferably from a teacher.
  3. Obtain a copy of your college transcripts or, if an incoming freshman, obtain a copy of your high school transcript with verification of your SAT/ACT test scores and rank in your high school class.

  • Undergraduate students must have completed a minimum of 30 semester credit hours

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Be an Undergraduate and have completed 30 credit hours with at least 12 hours at UTSA
  • Have a GPA ≥ 3.0
  • Be a United States citizen, naturalized citizen, refugee, or permanent resident at the time of application
  • Be enrolled full-time in an engineering major taking 12 or more credit hours a semester
  • Demonstrate financial need, as defined by the US Department of Education rules for Federal financial aid for undergraduates

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate students expecting to graduate no earlier than December 2015 who are taking upper division courses in engineering.
  • San Antonio ABET Accredited Engineering Curriculum (UTSA, Trinity, St. Mary’s).
  • Full-time student in good standing.
  • Student Member of ASME.

SAN ANTONIO PIPELINERS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Enrolled on a full-time basis as a second through fifth year undergraduate
  • Actively pursuing a degree in the field of engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio
  • Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0
  • Able to attend a SAPA event to be recognized for achievements

THE USAA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Incoming freshmen or current undergraduate students at UTSA with a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA.
  • Engineering majors enrolled full-time (12 semester credit hours), with a minimum of 3 hours in the College of Engineering at the time of the award.
  •  Demonstrate financial need, as defined by the US Department of Education rules for Federal financial aid for undergraduates

The $1,000 scholarship is open to all undergraduate students who have completed 2 years of their programs in the Mechanical or Civil Engineering departments.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            In addition to the scholarships, recipients may also be eligible for paid summer internships at USDA agencies and research experience at UTSA research labs.

CRITERIA:

  • Full-time undergraduate student in Mechanical or Civil Engineering;
  • Completed 60 credit hours (at least 12 of which at UTSA);
  • A cumulative 3.0 grade point average;
  • One essay (max. 2 pages, single space, 12-point font, 1-inch margins) indicating: how this scholarship will benefit their academic career and what is your 5-year plan including your academic career and beyond;
  • Be a United States citizen, naturalized citizen, refugee, or permanent resident at the time of application.

HARNEK S. & MALKIT GILL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (GRADUATE STUDENTS)

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Graduate students in good academic standing and enrolled full-time at UTSA
  • Majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on 4.0 scale).

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

  • Completed College of Engineering General Scholarship Application Form
  • Special consideration shall be given to any applicant who can show proof of residence of a village in Punjab, India. Proof must come in the form of a letter from a member of the applicant’s village council, or panchaya, who will certify the applicant is a resident of said village.

TERRACON ENDOWED GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING (GRADUATE STUDENTS)

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Graduate student with full-time enrollment in UTSA College of Engineering pursuing a graduate level degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0
  • Preference will be given to students who show financial need as identified by the UTSA Office of Financial Aid
  • Scholarship is renewable for second year provided the student awarded maintains a 3.0 grade point average.
